What is Kala Sarpa Dosham (Yoga)? Effects and Remedies Explained by Dr. K.V.N. Prasad
In Vedic astrology, one of the most frequently discussed concepts is Kala Sarpa Dosham—also referred to as Kala Sarpa Yoga. Many people consider it a powerful astrological condition that can influence various aspects of life. However, it is also one of the most misunderstood and unnecessarily feared concepts.
In this blog, I will explain what Kala Sarpa Dosham really means, its supposed effects, and the simple remedies you can follow for peace of mind.
What Is Kala Sarpa Dosham?
In Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu are considered shadow planets that symbolically represent a serpent—Rahu being the head and Ketu the tail of the snake.
Kala Sarpa Dosham occurs when all seven planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) are positioned between Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope. If every planet is enclosed within the Rahu–Ketu axis, the chart is said to have Kala Sarpa Dosham or Kala Sarpa Yoga.
For example, if Rahu is placed in one house and Ketu is directly opposite, and the remaining planets fall between these two points—leaving no planets on the other side—this configuration is considered Kala Sarpa Dosham.
Partial Kala Sarpa Dosham
If even one planet lies outside the Rahu–Ketu axis, it is called a partial Kala Sarpa Dosham.
Types of Kala Sarpa Yoga
Traditional astrology gives different names to Kala Sarpa Yoga depending on the house in which Rahu is placed—such as Ananta, Kulika, Vasuki, Shankapala, Padma, Karkotaka, and so on. These are mainly academic classifications and do not change the fundamental concept.
Does Kala Sarpa Dosham Really Cause Problems?
In popular astrology, Kala Sarpa Dosham is often associated with:
- Delays in career or marriage
- Obstacles in life
- Psychological stress or restlessness
However, based on my experience and understanding, Kala Sarpa Dosham alone does not create negative outcomes.
The results in a person’s life depend primarily on:
- The houses occupied by the planets
- The houses ruled by these planets
- The strength and dignity of each planet
If the planets are positioned to deliver good results, they will do so—regardless of whether Kala Sarpa Dosham exists. Similarly, if delays or challenges are indicated by planetary placements, they may occur with or without this yoga.
Unfortunately, many people develop fear or anxiety simply because they read about Kala Sarpa Dosham online or hear it from someone. This psychological fear often becomes more troublesome than the yoga itself.
Remedies for Mental Peace
If you still feel concerned and want to perform remedies for your own peace of mind, here are some simple options:
1. Visit Sri Kalahasti Temple (Andhra Pradesh)
Sri Kalahasti is one of the most famous temples for Rahu–Ketu related rituals. A specific Kala Sarpa Dosha Puja is performed here. This ritual provides mental relief, although its effect is temporary and may need to be repeated if you believe in such practices.
2. Wear Rudraksha Beads
- 8-Mukhi Rudraksha for Rahu
- 9-Mukhi Rudraksha for Ketu
These are believed to reduce negative influences and bring balance.
3. Chant Rahu and Ketu Mantras
You can chant the Bija mantras for Rahu and Ketu. The mantras are available on my website under the Remedies & Mantras section:

4. Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” Daily
This simple and universal mantra helps calm the mind and bring emotional stability.
Final Thoughts
Whether Kala Sarpa Dosham is present or not, every planet in your chart has a duty—based on its placement and house rulership—to deliver specific results. Those outcomes will manifest as they are meant to, independent of this yoga.
So instead of fearing Kala Sarpa Dosham, focus on understanding your chart holistically and improving your life through positive actions.
